Canadian Players of the Year

The CSA have announced their players of the year in all categories. The two big winners in Male and Female players of the year went to Simeon Jackson and Christine Sinclair respectively.

Simeon Jackson was a bit of a surprise considering the twenty-two-year-old forward didn’t start for he Gold Cup. It looks like Simeon was given the award based on club form helping Gillingham gain promotion to League One. Jackson seems to be making some noise in the English game and he has been linked with several Premier League clubs this January. Its good to see this award go to a young prospect who will surely be part of Canada’s 2014 qualifying campaign. From all accounts Hart rates Jackson highly so we should see lots of him in the near future.

With this award under his belt it makes next year all the more important. If Simeon is offered a move to the Premier League, even one which has him sitting on the bench, he should jump on it right away. His stock is as high as it can possibly be right now playing in League One. If he waits any longer to make that crucial step up it could be too late. Playing the Premier League would undoublty be a massive achievement for Canadian soccer having a young forward at that age playing at such a high standard (and one that has committed to Canada *cough*Hoilet *cough*).

In the end I would have given my Canadian player of the year to Dejan Jakovic for a tremendous Gold Cup and solid form with DC United. Dejan Jakovic really is the great hope for the Canadian national team at the back.

On the women’s side the award was given to Christine Sinclair for the fifth straight year and it comes as no real surprise after she had a respectable first season in the WPS with FC Gold Pride. Personally I think keeper, Karina LeBlanc, deserved the award after leading the Los Angeles Sol to a first place finish in the WPS.

Congratulations to Simeon and Chrisitne, and here’s to better year for Canadian soccer in 2010.
